review 1: Chick-lot, but pretty interesting. So Carolina setting, Charleston society wife with 2 kids spends each summer at her family beach pies while her high powered husband works. He a bully and she loves the time at the beach. She is a long time advocate for the loggerhead turtles and catalogs and protects the nests at the beach. Meets a scientist there to do a study on the turtles and false in love, finally realizing how much abuse and neglect she has settled for in her marriage. Bullied by her husband to come home at the end of summer, she and scientist agree to meet in 6 months if they both decide to move forward, instead of staying with their marriages. A tragedy happens to him, and she and husband call a truce as they work on issues that have to be resolved. This wa... mores set in the 70's, but I'm not sure why. There were references now and then to the time, but it seemed random for the time setting. It could have been set at any time. The setting was interesting, it was a little trite, often used storyline. But, an easy, ok read.
review 2: I could not get into this book. I thought I would enjoy it because it is about loggerhead sea turtles and a beach and a romance. Perhaps because it takes place in 1974 in the South and Lovie is a well off, traditional Southern woman. I found her boring. Plus it really irritated me how everyone on the island including Lovie seemed to think that because Russell Bennett had a Ph.D he was a big cheese. Please. I work at a world class university and am surrounded by people with doctorates. They don't know everything and I view "experts" with suspicion. Anyway, Imgave up on this book. less
