review 1: I didn't dislike the story it was just a bit too slow for me. I loved all of the characters and Monroe does a great job in developing all of her characters. The story was moving and I did enjoy learning about butterflies and their amazing journey. I also love Mexico and I enjoyed the culture brought into the story and learning a bit about the day of the dead..a very important celebrated holiday in Mexico. Not the best book I have read by this author.
review 2: This was okay. I enjoyed the concept of the extended family and following the migration of the Monarch butterflies from North to Mexico - they are amazing creatures! But something fell short. I felt like I was reading a simplified and generic 'television for women' or 'chick lit' book that somehow
... morelacked the extra something that it needed to make it really connect. While I loved the idea of a girl on a journey and the happenstance connections she makes along the way - something about it felt predictable and shallow. The basic story is that Luz has grown up with her Abuela in Milwaukee, her mother died when she was young. She is raised with her Abuela's big heart and learns all about the lives of Monarch Butterflies. When her grandma tells her they have to go to Mexico to see the sanctuaries - Luz tries to put it off due to practical life reasons, but her grandma insists, but then unexpectedly passes away. So Luz sets out to fulfill the mission on her own. Luz connects with several random women along the way to Texas, where she finds that her mother is actually still alive and a recovering addict. That realization is bittersweet and mending their relationship is hard. But together they finish the journey to their ancestral home in Mexico to honor Abeula and her ofrenda as well as to complete a sacred circle of mother to daughter at the butterfly sanctuary. The ending part was quite awesome - and the journey was good too -- but lacking in substance and depth. less
