review 1: What a charming story. Balogh had me hooked. Her fantastic storytelling combined with the unique and yet straightforward descriptions brought this world to life in a realistic yet vividly fantastic manner. Readers are transported to The Season amidst London’s ton scene. Balls come to life in a breathtaking manner that you can’t help but picture. This is one of those stories that you know must end with a HEA but can’t quite figure out how it will happen. The twists and turns that this story took, although not necessarily earth shattering, definitely kept me on my toes.I love the way that Balogh describes people. She catalogues their features the way one would think about them if you met them at a gathering and wanted to be sure to remember them. Physical featu... moreres and apparent personality traits are at the forefront. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the main characters in this story. Individually they were entertaining and one of a kind. However, his broodiness combined with her cheerful disposition in such a remarkably inviting way that I couldn’t help but smile. I definitely can’t wait to delve further into this series & into this author’s work.
review 2: Meh. I usually love Mary Balogh, but this was not her strongest effort. Even taking into account that there's inevitably a fair bit of setup and back story to establish a series when you are writing the first book, such as introducing all the characters and cementing them as "the beautiful one", "the plain one", etc. this felt disjointed, formulaic and stilted. Signature Balogh style is to steer very close to the rocky shores of severely aggravating communication breakdown and then pull back before the crash, by having a good sit down talk between hero & heroine that resolves issues that are keeping them apart. In this instance, it was done with a heavy hand, and I found myself sympathizing with the woeful sighs of the hero as he felt himself drawn into yet another Talk About FEEEEELINGS from the heroine. Same deal with the big declaration of undying lurve at the end. Too mushy, even for a die-hard romantic like myself. The whole tenor of the book is over-the-top. Don't just say a thing is lovely; declare it to be the loveliest, bestest, most gorgeousest EVAR! Don't settle for moving up the social chain from Baronet to Viscount; go all the way for Seekrit Duke! Don't just gather a bouquet of flowers; decimate the entire field! I have no patience for this much unironic hyperbole and soap-opera dialogue, sorry. less

Would have been a 3 if the ending had not ended so suddenly with other story lines not wrapped!

If you're a fan of historical romance, Mary Balogh hits the mark as usual.

As predicted, could have been made better by a Wulf cameo. ;)

A little too stuffy for me.
