review 1: Okay, so maybe this book is a little sugary-sweet. But I love it. Despite, because, who cares? Jory seems almost unreal--everyone loves him, and he can talk to absolutely anybody. I can't imagine ever being that socially aware. But I've met people like him. In real life. They're rare, but they do exist, and reading this book was just a very happy time for me. Sam was a perfectly imperfect foil for Jory and his friendly-but-not-really-friends attitude. Neither of them are perfect. And at times, they're not even that likeable (but I'd liked them anyway), but they keep coming back together in a grand demonstration that sheer stubbornness can sometimes beat all odds.
review 2: So, this has a lot of things I normally don't want / enjoy in a book — first person POV
... more, self-absorbed and at times TSTL MC, somewhat stilted dialogue, lots and lots of dialogue that have nothing to do with the plot, how everyone seems to either be gorgeous or beautiful or perfect, how everyone just seems to loooooooove Jory and how they can't resist telling him how beautiful and perfect he is... Even though he was a bit annoying with the way he kept running away from or hanging-up on Sam.But for some absurd reason I really enjoyed this. Some parts actually had me chuckling out loud because the situation and/or dialogue was just funny. I blame most of it on the narrator (Paul Morey). This is definitely a book that's better as an audiobook for me since reading it myself would have quickly become tedious (but that's just me and my dislike for 1st person APOV).I liked Sam Kage much better than Jory. He was a complete alpha male and hot. If you like or have read Japanese shounen ai or yaoi novels and mangas, then this will probably be something you'd enjoy since it borrows a lot of tropes from those mediums. The whole seme/uke dynamic and character traits, the Mary Sue-ish characters, even certain aspects of the plot and dialogue. Stay away, though, if you actually want heavier plot and substance and if you can't stand characters who are just too perfect to be real. less

Jory is a pain in the butt sometimes -- most times -- but I can't help it! I love these books.
