review 1: I love Mary Downing Hahn, and the books I read as a child still creep me out as an adult. However, this book felt very incomplete, and I found it quite disappointing. Children's books are obviously more simple than those aimed at adults, but that wasn't the case here. For instance, on the second instance that Florence meets Nellie, she says something about how that was the most she'd ever heard Nellie say. Really? That's the most she's ever said in the 12 hours you've known her? The characters felt incomplete, the storyline had holes, and there was an overall feeling that an awful lot was borrowed from The Secret Garden. The reason for the haunting is implausible. It would make a great first draft, but as a finished novel, it falls short.
review 2: First, F... morelorence Crutchfield arrives at Crutchfield Hall and her aunt automatically hates her. Next, Sophia, Florence's cousin who died the year before haunts her in search for revival and someone to take her place. Then, Florence takes down James's charm the protects him from evil things that lurks like Sophia. After that, Sophia enters James's room and makes him come come apon the roof while he is deathly ill in hope that he will die from the cold or slip off the roof from the ice and snow so that he will take here place so that she can live again. After that, James wobbles over to Sophia very hesitantly and pushes her off the roof so that her and her soul are finally dead. I honestly love this book! I give it five stars. It is quite frightening yet, yet so mysterious. I fully recommend this book. Mary Downing Hahn is the best author! less
