review 1: It's been awhile since I've read some HR, but I'm glad I jumped into this one. It's different, with a bow street runner hero with a past first love and with a heroine with a dead fiancé. Both characters enjoyed each other's company, but hadn't realized that they were falling in love. It isn't the lovey dovey, gooey kind. But the rock steady dependable kind of love and understanding. It's essentially a very safe and productive relationship in which both hero and heroine are equals. I loved that quality, where they made decisions together.Otherwise, it wasn't a particularly well paced book. Too many things happened and yet it felt like nothing happened...I think it's the writing style for the plot that falls flat. I mainly enjoyed the main characters enough to overlook thos... moree flaws.
review 2: Still can't believe Putney wrote this. Just horrible. I skimmed the last half. It was just one unbelievable, cliched plot twist after another. No characterization, no internal conflict, no subtle writing or imagery or nuance of any kind. Just a bunch of "I researched 19th century yawls, so now allow me to info dump" followed by random, totally pointless plot developments that had nothing do with the natural growth of the characters. Sorry but Putney is no longer on my list of must reads. Sad, really, since I loved her Fallen Angel books... less

Inoffensive, lightweight fluff. Perfectly enjoyable yet utterly forgettable.
