review 1: This novel brings me to mind of something said in one of my favorite tv shows, the x-files: "if coincidences are coincidences, why do they feel so contrived?" It kept repeating in my head throughout reading, as things seem to happen either too quickly or at the same time. The premiss of the novel is interesting though, it may just be lacking in pacing and a little focus. It could have easily started after the rescue and been a perfectly good story. It just feels as if there are two novels here, and both incomplete.
review 2: Miss Sarah Clarke-Townsend is out exploring her sister's estate with her heavily-pregnant sister, Mariah. While walking around a deserted ruin of a chapel, Mariah goes into labor and Sarah sends their groom back to the house to fetch a wagon
... more. Meanwhile, she overhears several men plotting to kidnap Mariah, so she hides her sister and passes herself off as the duchess, which is easy to do since they are identical twins. As soon as Mariah's husband, the Earl of Ashton hears this, he hires his friend, Rob Carmichael, a Bow Street runner to follow the miscreants and bring Sarah back home safely. Rob follows Sarah as she is taken across the sea to Ireland by a group called Free Eire, looking to release Ireland from the yoke of British oppression. Rob and Sarah have many adventures and eventually escape back to England where they wash up on the coastline of Rob's ancestral home, Kellington Castle. Estranged from his father and brother, Rob has not heard of their deaths and his own inheritance of the title of Duke of Kellington, which comes with a lot of debt and not much else except estates mortgaged to the hilt. Rob and Sarah begin to work together to solve some of Rob's immediate problems at Kellington and the feelings that had sprung up between the Ireland continue to grow. While part of a series of books featuring "The Lost Lords," all the books are capable of being read separately. They feature strong, stalwart heroes, each with a dark secret and heroines with pluck and integrity. less
