review 1: Historical English romance with high born people that have had terrible ruined childhoods that were not protected by their wealth or education. Major Alexander Randall has to come back to England so that he can take the position as the last remaining heir to the Earl of Daventry. The first thing that he must do is get married and sire some extra heirs for the Randall family. With some crazy kidnapping plots he ends up with his first choice for a wife, the widowed little village midwife, Mrs. Julia Bancroft. Julia has a LOT of secrets. Wow! I'm not sure that I've read a more secretive and mysterious person, but she can not hide her beauty or her educated refined upbringing.Crazy abusive combined past although they have never met each other.Lots of respect for abused wives e... moreverywhere and I like that Julia takes lots of time to heal from her awful first marriage as well as taking care to ease into a new marriage.Well written and my favorite book in this Lost Lords series! So good!335 pages
review 2: After some heavy books, I was really in the mood for mindless regency romance, and Mary Jo Putney always fills the bill well. Apparently the two main characters were introduced in the first book in this series, but reading it does not appear to have been necessary. Lady Julia Raines, daughter of a duke, has hidden away as a country midwife ever since she fought off her drunken brute of a husband, causing him to hit his head and die and her to lose the child she was carrying. Major Alexander Randall hasn't been able to get the beautiful "Mrs. Bancroft" out of his head since they met in the first book. When he pays a call on her he finds she's been abducted by her late husband's henchmen bent on revenge. Of course he saves the damsel in distress, discover that her husband is the same brute he was raised with who also made his life a living hell. The only obvious choice is to marry her - even though she tells him she doesn't think she can bear to be touched by a man and that even if she could, she has been told she can't have children. And of course that doesn't stop him, and those fears of being touched are soon thrown out the window. There's a whole lot touching. There was a lot less conflict in this one that one might expect, but I didn't mind it. I enjoyed the tale enough that I think I may go back and read the rest of the series. less

The ending was wrapped up a little too easily but I still liked the story and the characters.

Lady Julia was great. The story was a little weak but still entertaining.
