review 1: Loved this account of the two young girls in Cottingley, England who took pictures of fairies. Cousins Elsie and Frances saw fairies, but when no one believed them, they set out to prove it by taking pictures. The girls never intended the hoax to get out of hand, but soon famous people like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle were arguing that their photos proved fairies existed! Losure has written a captivating account of this true story that will definitely appeal to anyone who wants to believe in fairies. The book includes the original Cottingley fairy photos.
review 2: Heartwarming story about two girls in war torn England, who concoct a fantastic hoax when they claim to see fairies in the woods near their home. In reality, the fairies are merely cleverly drawn and co
... morelored stick figures, small forms in the children's game of make believe. Unfortunately, word leaks out to the public and once the media seizes upon the story, the girls have little choice but to continue the ruse.Even Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is intrigued by the girls' story. Interviews are conducted and considerable money is invested into providing the girls with the photographic equipment they need to capture the images of the fairies. Again and again, the girls provide marvelous photographs of their fairy friends. Eventually, however, the girls begin to grow a little older, finally realizing their folly. The game no longer holds great appeal for them and they take a few last shots for their anxious public, including a small "bird's nest" that they happen to see on their way out of the woods. The bird's nest provides stunning clues that the fairies are real! It is a real fairy bower, but when the truth at last comes to light, no one believes that the fairies might indeed be real. Wonderful story about the power of faith and belief at a time when the world was torn by war. Indeed, our youth was slowly being stripped from us, too, and reality was difficult to face. Nevertheless, we cannot lose hope. Like the girls in the story, the wonder of what is truly around us may be more fascinating and exciting than any story we could invent. less
