review 1: 3.5 stars. Enjoyable yet uneven, Atwell's first novel is a mean girls meets the Salem Witch trials (except the destructive teenagers really are possessed). The narrator, Kate, is well-drawn and likable: she is observant, wry, self-aware, and well-intentioned. The run-down Appalachian town of Swan River is well-portrayed, though the rendering of the rich girls' academy relies a little too much on stereotypes and stock characters. An enjoyable, fast read; good distraction!
review 2: I inhaled this book last night even though I was quite tired and needed to get to sleep. And after finishing it, I had nightmares of things collapsing all around me. To keep up a mother with young kids, and then to squirm into her subconscious, are both neat tricks. This author wri
... moretes with a sense of voice & character that gives her a certain authority, so as readers we accept whatever crazy thing comes next down the pike. I do wish she had pushed the allegorical (almost wrote allegirlical!) level farther...somehow the ending was too easy, too pat. I wanted more destruction. less

Interesting read. Not a true page turner but it kept my interest. I would recommend.
