review 1: O'Hara's novel tells the story of an accomplished young woman who longs for a career as an artist in New York City. However, facing financial ruin, she unwisely married a small-town man who just wants a wife and mother for the family he hopes to have. For the backdrop of the story, O'Hara used the real-life tale of the creation of the Quabbin Reservoir in Massachusetts, in which four towns were demolished to create a reservoir for Boston. Cascade and the crisis facing its residents is the same. Story had surprising depth and ends with a twist.
review 2: After reading Gone Girl- a hurricane, and The Woman Upstairs-a day in a too-long winter, this book was a refreshing summer day. The pace reflected the era, which was captured perfectly. I didn't love the main
... more character. Her story left me disappointed in the end. The backdrop of the town being taken over was fascinating, but I think I would have enjoyed reading more about the real towns that were taken by emminent domain. Overall, the story could have been more interesting, but I did enjoy it overall. less

A nice story about choosing between love of art and secure marriage. Lots of twists and turns.

Historically interesting, hard-to-believe characters. Writing was so-so. Almost didn't finish.

This is one of my favorite books that I have read so far this year.

Some beautiful writing. Too slow to make the whole story flow.
