review 1: The Ex-boyfriend's handbook.. I guess I can add it to my list of favorites. I loved Ed because he was so adorable, clueless and a good guy who'd just been dumped by his annoying girlfriend cos he was fat. Though he really wanted to get her back and was working on his flaws (and they were numerous), I kinda had the feeling that he'd fall for his instructor (which was cute by the way) and ditch Jane (the annoying girlfriend). Anyway it's a really cool book and it reminded me so much of 'How I met Your Mother'. In my mind Ed was Ted and Dan was Barney, made it more awesome to read.
review 2: I had this debut novel of Matt Dunn's on my Kindle for quite a while, but after my sister started chuckilng whilst reading it I decided to give it a go. Edward Middleton is a
... morenormal bloke who has been with his girlfriend Jane for years. He wakes up one morning to find he is on the receiving end of a Dear John letter. According to Jane, Edward has let himself go, so she decides to let him go and takes all her things with you. The first few chapters don't particularly show Ed in a good light, I would almost go as far as to say he was a typically weak man who had no idea what he had done wrong. We then meet Ed's friend Dan Davis who certainly brings a different type of humour to the book. Dan is the star of a daytime TV show and as such is a pretty good looking guy whose middle name is modest! With Dan's help, along with the barmaid from their local pub they make a list of things for Ed to do. This includes losing weight, getting a new haircut along with lots of innapropriate suggestions from Dan!I found myself smirking at quite a lot of the situations Ed manages to get himself into. This certainly made me laugh and I think its a book that appeals to all as I can imagine both men and women would like this. At times I got irrittated by Ed's lack of drive and he ocassionally came across as a bit of a wet lettuce, but Dan seemed to balance this out by being so outrageously confident it was laughable. The story kept me entertained and by the time I got to the end I was dissapointed that I didn't have more to read. Thankfully the second book written by Matt Dunn featurd both Dan and Ed, so unusually for me I picked that straight up. This is definately the new genre of 'Lad Lit' and Matt Dunn is certainly an author to watch. Am really looking forward to the next one. less

I loved this book!Jane leaves Edward because he has "let himself go", has become stagnant in his career, and seems to be stuck in his less than stellar life. However, Jane left with "I'll be back April 16th, so perhaps we'll talk then," and Edward takes this hint of a possible reconciliation and he runs with it. He embarks on a quest to lose weight, hiring a hot personal trainer to get him in shape. He goes shopping for a new wardrobe and new apartment furniture. He consults with his friends, and ex-girlfriends about where he went wrong. He attempts to date. He embarks on reinventing his career, and thus himself. Will all his hard work lead him back to Jane or onto a path he never predicted?I enjoyed this book thoroughly. The secondary characters are interesting and believable. His best friend Dan, is funny and painfully male. Natasha, Edward's boss is the perfect combination of annoying harlot & spiteful witch. The writing is superb. I laughed with Edward and ached with Edward. Dunn writes this story, that others have described as "male-chic-lit" without making Edward seem less-than-manly. While others saw the ending as a foregone conclusion, I was never quite sure what path Edward would take. Dunn keeps you guessing til' the end. I highly recommend this book!

To me, this was a classic British humorous happy book. As in, lighthearted, optimistic reading mixed in with a sprinkle of sarcasm. I love this book because of the pure romcom of it, but my only problem would be that the plot reveals itself too easily. If you read this book, remember that it is not for someone looking for complexity in their reading material, but instead a simplicity that keeps the reader in the story. In general, however, I do admit that although the main character is a man, the story would be more appealing to women, just because it really is a fairy tale.
