review 1: The year is 1868 and a new college, MIT, is graduating its first class. The idea that science can explain and control the environment of Boston is an anathema to a faith-based society; especially Harvard. New ideas are permeating society; Darwinism, chemistry, electricity are being discussed. Several attacks of terrorism throw Boston into panic. A group of MIT students try to figure out what is happening. Can their scientific ideas explain these attacks to a population that rejects this type of inquiry? I liked the premise very much. Technology with its many branches is still a topic of discussion and acceptance. I enjoyed reading this book.
review 2: 1860's Boston harbor, the quiet of a foggy evening is interrupted by crash and explosions as ships throu... moreghout the harbor as they miss their mooring and lanes crashing into wharfs and each other. Soon after, all the glass on the building on State st, melt and fall to the streets. What is causing these catastrophes and how to stop it fall on the shoulders on the newly founded MIT student, techies. With all the thrill of a Hardy boys story, they use science to understand what and who is behind it all and stop them in their tracks. This is an interesting look back a emerging post civil war technologies and how they were perceived by the masses. It would be interesting to have this brought forward to compare it to today's boosts in technologies and how it, like the internet, is widely misunderstood by the masses. less
