review 1: When reading this book, at times I was bawling my eyes out, and at other times I was laughing like a fool. Not many books can achieve that. Although the language that the heroine, Amber Appleton, uses was a little weird at first, I eventually adapted to it. This book was amazing and all but I would have liked more of a closure. Maybe a snapshot of Amber's future life in the beginning, so this book would have been a flashback. Or just a few more pages as.a summary of what happened to the important characters in this book. Also, I would really like to know what her mother's murderer wanted to say to Amber. I mean the author emphasized how much the murderer wanted Amber to put on the headset so he can talk to her, and it just stops there with her walking out?! Don't get me wr... moreong. I like how she realized she's just a kid and stood up to him, but I would still like to know what the murderer wanted to say. Maybe it was something important. Now, I'll never know.
review 2: I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Yes, it's sentimental (but never mushy), and sometimes unrealistic, but it mixes that with shocking truth. Sentiment is certainly not a bad thing and Matthew Quick seems to excel in creating fantasy worlds where people are kind and considerate. And I am loving that about his books so far. Amber is a delightful character who is an outsider and befriends other outsiders, including the wonderful Private Jackson, who is still traumatised by the Vietnam war and writes haikus as a kind of therapy. The climax is lovely and emotionally resonant. Happy endings are perfectly legitimate in art because you don't get them in life. The book deals honestly with tragedy and depression, and gives us a central character to care about deeply and a group of supporting characters to love. What's not to like? Art should be better than life, and this is.That said, I do have some minor quibbles, such as the various names for Bobby Big Boy (B3, B thrice etc.). This got mildly irritating, but I liked the character so much that I put it down as on of those annoying traits your loved ones have that make them who they are and are actually rather endearing. And, Yes, Donna is too good to be true, and her view that men are really teenage boys who need to be herded like sheep is ridiculous and is "proven" in an unlikely scene involving straw men. But she is good and kind generally and I think Amber would grow up to see that this outlook is wrong. But the book is stronger for having a variety of characters and views and I strongly recommend it to everyone who loves a good story. less

What an utterly charming book! If "It's a Wonderful Life" were a YA novel...
