review 1: A Deadly Penance is a mystery set in thirteenth century Lincoln with a Templar Knight as detective. The author works hard at creating a setting and a broad cast of characters. I came to laugh as she spent much time early in the book describing the character's drinks. Her detective is not central enough to the story and the mystery is a bit ponderous, but I would pick up another in the series if I saw it.
review 2: This is a good series. A well told story but I has a sense that the story is somewhat of a placeholder. The overall flow of the series did not advance and there was not a lot of further character development. The mystery is well done, and the characters are interesting, but it looks like there is something coming and we needed an intermediate book ... moreto fill in just a few gaps to get there. I liked it, and it will be interesting to see where the series goes next. less
