review 1: As a grandmother reading this book I found myself in different "places" at different parts of this story...Poor little Odeline my grandmother self would think at certain places. I can so remember those feelings my youthful self would think at other places. Oh, she's so rigid, but that makes her strong, right? My mother self would so hopefully think at other places. In all the places, though, my heart and my funny bone were totally involved...and, I learned some lessons along with Odeline!
review 2: I have very mixed feelings about this book. I didn't like Odeline much at first, as she was so unfriendly and self-serving. Once she gets caught up in the lives of her neighbors on the canal I found myself being very drawn in at times. But even then the main plot was
... more interrupted with back-story chapters that I found hard to follow. Many of them did not name the characters or make the time period clear until well into the chapter, so I ended up checking out because I couldn't tell who I was reading about. less
