review 2: A decent beach-read, I suppose, but (as per usual) I have some beefs with this story:#1. I'm sick to death of portraying the brilliant engineer/etc as an antisocial freak with fifth-degree Aspergers. It's just lazy and, as an (admittedly orders-of-magnitude-less-gifted) engineer, it's insulting.#2. Pacing is HORRIBLE. Good LORD. Listening to the audio book, I could zone out for a minute or two and not miss anything some times; meanwhile towards the end they just fast-forward through so much character development it's insane. #3. The complete omission of sex. I mean, I realize that keeping it PG probably helps move units/keep people subscribed (the book started as an online serial, IIRC), but you can't tell me that any normal person would happily replace their entire body and never think "Wait a minute, what about my bits?" It's really jarring. Yeah, I get that he's bad with women, but come on. #4. The portrayal of all things corporate/managerial as completely evil. I mean, I'm probably as much of a lefty as anybody, but I will at least acknowledge that the people who do awful things in the name of corporate greed have some sort of personal justification for what they do, aside from a blind allegiance to a paycheck. All that said, the book does bring up, and briefly explore some pretty interesting ideas. But it seems like it even does that by accident, and then quickly discards them. less

Great read. Quick, smart, funny, lots of elements. Now I want to be an engineer.

Knocked off one star because my average brain couldn't handle the science.
