review 1: The Harlem Hellfighters deserved a hell of a storyteller, and they got it in the amazing Max Brooks. He and artist Canaan White shed light on little-known American heroes. As one of the characters says, they left home to make the world safe for democracy, even though democracy wasn't safe at home. First soldiers to arrive at the Rhine. First American to win France's Croix de Guerre. Yet their story has remained obscure because they were African Americans. Kudos to Brooks and White for bringing this story out of the shadows.
review 2: This flew by like a good movie. I'd not read a graphic novel for a while and whilst I'd have loved some color on the pages the story and the art work were just outstanding. Hellfighters is the story of the only black American soldi
... moreers in WW1 who were such fierce victims of racism on their own shores that the only way they could answer the call they felt and fight for democracy was to fight along side the French. They tore it up, never losing a trench, never losing someone to capture. Dark, gritty, inspiring and tragic it's worthy of a read and to be passed on so others know the story. less

Not really into graphic novels but this was a very short, concise tale of the Harlem Hellfighters.

I doubt that I'll ever read another graphic novel as good as the Harlem Hellfighters.
