review 1: I received this book as a LibraryThing Early Reviewers copy. I have not read any of Maya Banks previous books, but had always heard wonderful things about her stories. Unfortunately, I don't believe that this book lived up to the hype of the author. I felt like I really needed to read the other books in the series to understand the main character. I got the sense that there was a lot more back story that wasn't covered here and that this did not make for a great stand alone book. Instead I found myself frustrated reading this story and wondering why the author kept calling attention to a deformity or a scar on Genevieve's face, when it really didn't have a lot to do with the romance or interactions of her and any other character. I understood that she was very mistreated a... morend her brutal past was retold with many unpleasant details and the scar was the physical embodiment of the pain. I did feel compassion for Genevieve, but it still left me wondering as to why the focus on the physical scar if the main character still found her beautiful. I also didn't find Bowin, her hero very appealing. I'm sure that he had to have more back story in another book because I just found their romance lacking in development. I wont go as far to say that this wasn't a good book. I just found it lacking as a stand alone novel. I'm sure I could enjoy another one of Maya Banks books and maybe even another one in this series. I just wasn't wowed by this lone story.
review 2: 4 3/4 stars. I think I love this author. This book was SO good. A little bit of everything I love. I found Genevieve a truly compelling heroine. How she was able to survive all she was put through was so remarkable. Her strength to carry on through everything she endured was one of my favorite things about this book. And then add in Bowen, a great love story, a little heart break, some pretty sweet revenge, and some really great reunions and you get yet another great novel. I was grinning from ear to ear. I loved this one ALMOST as much as I loved the first book in the series, and that was a LOT. I will definitely be checking out more from this author for sure. less
