review 1: 'Popular' is a fun quick read and although I love the premise I felt it was to much of a coming of age novel rather than a social experiment. To me it was more of a platform for Maya to share her general experiences of being a teenager but using the guide as an interesting way to hook readers. For her age Maya is a strong writer but I think I just expected things from the book I didn't get. However this in no way means it's a bad book and does challenge the notion of what it means to be popular it just wasn't the book for me.
review 2: Easily accessible autobiography/memoir by Van Wagenen who spent one of her middle school years in a Texas public school, following, month by month, a 1951 Betty Cornell book BETTY CORNELL'S TEENAGE POPULARITY GUIDE. Maya spent
... more one month watching her diet, one focused on her hair, one on her clothes, etc. Interesting take on what it means to be popular, then and now. This was a fun read by a strong young woman who does not see herself as strong; I would recommend it to our middle school girls for sure. Funny, thought-provoking, in places a little scary, touching...4 stars out of 5! less

This is a book every young girl should read. I will definitely pass it on to Avery one day.
