review 1: Engaging fantasy story, and prequel to Of Last Resort, where we met the Paladin Kristoff and his husband, the Blood Prince Hakon. This is the story of the start of their relationship and seeks Kristoff unwillingly going to his marriage, not knowing which of the Princes he is to be the husband of. Hakon doesn't want a husband, he's probably the most rebellious of the Princes, and the one most in danger of having his Demon take over. This is a good enemies to lovers story as it involves a lot of interesting plot that is not centered around their relationship and a good solid happy ending.
review 2: Those of you who like fantasy and enemies to lovers should read this one. You don't really need to have read the previous book (though it might help with rememberin... moreg who's who).We have one tiny mean killing machine a.k.a the pseudo demon Hakon + tall noble Paladin a.k.a Kristof. They really dislike each other when they first meet, only to find out a few hours later that they are engaged and to be married in a week (because the king said so). Even when it turns out that the Paladin is actually horribly allergic to anything demon like the king still thinks it might work out wonderfully and even make Hakon chill and enjoy life. Either the king is a total sadist (which is totally possible considering what we know about him from the first book) or he knows there is no such thing as allergy to demons. In the end a random priest suggests some special tea and patience (because it might just be a temporary sensitivity) and things work out for the two of them. I'd have liked a more gradual "getting used to it" because it just seemed like all of a sudden it wasn't an issue anymore. On the other hand so many things happen around the two of them that you can understand them not having time to take it too slowly. less
