review 1: This is a collection of short stories about the Tavamara Harem as well as other people connected to it. Quite the collection of very fascinating stories. While the first few stories are a little tamer, the farther you progress the hotter they get. There was only one thing that irked me a little - I couldn't find a sentence in the book that really explained the dynamics of the harem: that the Queen and King could both have mistresses which are of the same sex. The reader can figure it out but there was no explanation of it anywhere in the book.
review 2: I enjoyed the characters in the harem, but I was surprised to find no actual sex scenes. By the time I finished all 5 chapters that focused on these characters, I assumed that the author didn't feel comfortable
... morewriting sex scenes. So, I accepted it and moved on.Imagine my surprise when there was descriptive sex in the Knight to Rook story. However, to my great dismay it felt out of place. I would have bet that a different author penned these scenes. They felt so forced. The continuous use of the words "heathen" and "savage" were a big turn off for me. I guess it was suppose to be "talking dirty", but it made the scene awkward and unsexy.I enjoyed the final story where the king met his wife, but I would have enjoyed more development. I want to know if the queen and king have a sexual relationship or are they satisfied with their own personal harem. I found the queen's lesbian relationship with her maid very refreshing. I felt there was so much potential to these characters, but the author never delved deep into them. I would recommend this book to someone who likes a good idea, but doesn't expect all their questions answered. less

Ms Derr really brought Tavamara and the complicated court life to colour. Recommended read.
