review 1: There is a lot to think about in this novel. It can seem so easy to judge those who believe differently from us as crazy or some other derogatory label, but what happens when we hold up a mirror to really look at what we say we believe and how (or if) it is lived out in our actions and choices every day? What would we believe in or how would we behave if we had been raised in a totally different environment? I read this book on my own, but I think it would be a great book club choice as there are lots of topics for discussion raised in the story.
review 2: I just didn't fall in love with this book. Sunny grows up in a cult and has 3 kids as a teenager and then is forced out by her mother before the rest all kill themselves. She goes to live with her real father
... more who she's never met and doesn't want kids and her stepmother who desperately wants a baby. It was hard to identify with Sunny and I never felt you really got to know her. The stepmother to me behaves quite bizarrely and her husband needs a good slap. I think the author intended you to get very involved in the characters but I just couldn't. less
