review 1: Well-written stories about people, often vulnerable and facing large changes in their lives, who are attached to or draw strength from pets, wild animals, and animals in refuges. That description makes the book sound like a volume of the Chicken Soup series which it's not, as the protagonists have serious problems that are not resolved by the end of the stories. Great book, realistic stories, and full of compassion for its characters, human and not.

... moree human experience and compelling: a teen-aged girl whose mother is dying; a futuristic world where the ocean has died and a 50-year-old woman is dealing with her father's dementia and love life; a young woman in a relationship with a zero-population-growth activist who finds herself pregnant; an alcoholic woman charge with keeping tropical endangered species alive during a blizzard-induced power outage. Megan Mayhew Bergman has a blog and other books that I am tempted to read since I value her deft story construction, beautiful phrasing, and poignant descriptions. less

The second best book I read in 2012, after Cheryl Strayed's "Wild".
