review 1: This book is about 2 different relationships. Both parts are told in alternating pov. From reading the blurb I knew the book would be about Dylan and Connor but this turned out to be the second relationship for Dylan. The first is between Dylan and Shane. They were best friends growing up and eventually fell in love. The first part of the book details their time together and is absolutely heartbreaking. From the beginning it's obvious this relationship will not end well but I was totally unprepared for what actually happened. I cried - ugly cried. I had to stop reading for a while after the first half. It was too painful to let go of Shane. At the time I cursed the author (although I won this book so I totally owe her!) for putting me in Shane's head. In the end I think h... moreer choice was brilliant. I truly felt Dylan's despair and could sympathize with his inability to let go. The second relationship is between Dylan and Connor. Although Connor has also known tragedy in his life his outlook is definitely brighter than Dylan's. Dylan and Connor are immediately attracted to one another. Connor knows what he wants and he goes after it but Dylan is wrapped tightly in his grief and has a hard time letting someone new in. The guys go through a lot on their way to their hard won HEA. In the end I really enjoyed the book. I definitely recommend it to lovers of angsty romance - just have tissues handy.
review 2: I wished I'd known that the first half of this book was the story of a depressed young man in an abusive family. He eventually took his life when his abusing father found out he was gay and his young lover was confronted meeting "the beard". Having lived the abuse part, it was hard to watch the train wreck. The second half is the surviving lover coming to terms with the loss 8 years later and trying to start over. It isn't easy and pretty, but necessary. Good but heartbreaking story and characters. My only complaint is really that it felt a little too "girly" for me; just the types of conversations and the way things were said. It felt different than other m/m stories. less
