review 1: I listened to this book and I did not like the narrator. The narrator sounded like an elderly lady and it was hard to imagine Emily Hudson as a young girl. I had to keep reminding myself her age every so often. Other than that I liked the book. It was your typically 1800’s love story. However, Emily was not your typical proper lady she was not going to act like everyone else but she was always concerning herself with what everyone thought of her.
review 2: I won this book through goodreads. Throughout most of the book I found the main character, Emily Hudson, to be something of a brat, almost like she suffered from oppositional defiance disorder. She acts irrationally and against the people who attempt to help her. However, on page 306, after reading
... morean Elizabeth Browning poem, she suddenly wakes up to her faults and strives to make amends. This was fortunate because, otherwise, it seemed the author was saying Emily's behavior was the natural behavior of youth. Up until page 306, I was going to rate this with two stars. Maybe I'm not the target audience for the book so I would recommend it to young women. less
