review 1: You pick this up thinking it is going to be light hearted and great, it turns out to be full of angst, but still great. This book is wonderfully put together and the characters are all wonderfully written. At times it felt like there was no real plot/end goal, but I guess the main point of it was her progressing as a character and going through teenage dramas and change. Deep, reflective, funny, nerdy, awesome.
review 2: I'm confused about how I feel about this. On one hand it's not as great as Life In Outer Space and I spent most of the book inwardly grimacing at the, for lack of a better description, kitchy trying too hard to be different attempt at a novel. Yeah by itself I probably could have dealt with the pre-Apocalypse setting, and yeah by itself I might... more have been able to ignore Alba's vintage indie look in a small country town, but combine that all up in with a few other cliches including the not terribly well explained or prominent theme of motorbikes are bad, and I just lost interest. On the other hand, I read it mostly in one sitting and I had a bit of a tear at the end, and I'm not even sure why. I felt a bit foul about three quarters of the way through, a melancholy and hibernating in my pyjamas and eating only ice cream for days kinda funk, then teared up in the big hurrah. Maybe that was just me though, maybe I wasn't in a sound state of mind. So, like I said, I'm not sure how I feel about this. I will continue to spout the good word about Life In Outer Space, and then perhaps let customers make their own choice on Cinnamon Girl. less
