review 1: I picked up The Perfect Distraction for free. I have not had the greatest luck with free books, but always add them to my Kindle because well, you never know. This one definitely was better than most. I still had some issues with it though. In the beginning the author is trying to give us a history, a description of our heroine and who she is, what she is. I was actually a bit, distracted (no pun intended!). I wasn’t sure here where she was going with all of it and I knew I wasn’t going to remember everything I was reading. The paragraphs were long and the thoughts labored. Is there such thing as over-detail? I think trying to cram in every little thought becomes draining. As much as I complain about some series or short novellas splitting up a continuous story, this one... more may benefit from that as it tries to accomplish time past by using flashbacks. Seeing that the flashbacks are still written on the page, I’m thinking why not have just written it straight out? It will still take up that space. To jump from endless description to a quick flashback of a few months past I feel as if too many important things are left out.The relationship between Katherine and Reed is fun and flirty and makes you can’t wait to see what happens between them. Until it does. Then Reed turns into a formal boring character."Katherine, you are more beautiful than I could have ever imagined, and believe me I did. Please tell me you’ve thought of me."I was like, zap. What the heck happened here? Where was the flirtatious Reed? I wanted him to take over and show Katherine what she needs. I know we were trying to be shown how Reed was changing and not a player, but that didn’t have to happen at the expense of his personality. One of my pet peeves is weak women. Katherine turns into this. No, not because she gets involved with the wrong guy, or that he tries to take advantage of her, but because she seems strong at the beginning and than she just falters. Almost as if she’s not even the same person. Add this to the now blah Reed and I am looking forward to the ending. The writing also becomes a bit repetitive as it tries to explain everything."Tomorrow will start a new day where I cannot allow myself to be distracted. Tonight though is different; I am greedy and determined to stay distracted."I think the theme of this story is too drawn out. Putting it together with the faults of the characters and I start to feel that the story has already been told many times. I’m okay with telling the same thing in a different way, as long as the writing is fresh and inspired. I just wasn’t feeling it here.Even despite my misgivings, I still don’t feel like this was a waste of space on my Kindle. I think the author has potential. I’m not sure if it will happen but I think with some editing and some honed in talent her stories can be great. I would be willing to try her out again. I see there is a second book to this series, The Perfect Emotion, continuing the story of Kate. I’m not sure how I feel about this. I kind of wish it was a fresh telling of some of the other characters maybe? Not sure if this is the book I will try, but maybe some day.
review 2: This is a hard book for me to review. The writing was stilted (especially most of the dialog) and the editing wasn't that great. Kate was a pretty annoying female, kind of passive and wishy-washy, which left her kind of stringing along the guys she met. Her inability to be firm with her ex led to a lot of problems for herself and others that got sucked into her life. That being said Reed was incredibly awesome and sizzling hot - the scenes with him were electric! I'm guessing he's the reason I couldn't put this book down. As soon as I finished it I purchased the next in the series, go figure... less
