The Frey Saga
review 1: An elf with little to no magic and no memory of her past, a Watcher from the North, a country and a people that's been devastated, and a mysterious book.Pros:The diary entries. They were well written and much more interesting than the book itself. The entries were intriguing and, like Frey, I was always impatient to read what happened next.Ruby. I liked her character. She was spunky and one of the few characters that were more developed. We actually knew some of her history and aspects of her personality.Cons:Frey. Her character was quite insipid. She basically did what she was told without question. She was on a mission for no apparent reason, with no purpose and no interest in what might be waiting at the end of it. Granted she knew next to nothing about her personal his... moretory and thought she had no magic at all, so it's not surprising that she didn't realize when she was performing magic, but how can she not be at least a little curious about herself? When she was first introduced to Chevelle, she did everything in her power, including stealing books from the Library and Council, to research and learn more about him and his family, but she never thought to look herself or her family up? She learned that her magic was bound but when she realized or was told that she was beginning to gain control of it again, she did nothing to strengthen it or learn more about how to wield it.1/2 to 2/3 of the book itself. The story developed very slowly. Even though multiple characters were introduced, very little is known about them and they disappear for most of the book. It wasn't until Ruby was introduced and the diary came into play that things started to get interesting. As noted above, there is an apparent lack of descriptors throughout the story. The places and people that are introduced all sound interesting but you're not able to develop a feel for any of them. They're too sparsely described and seem to fade into the background, rather than enhancing the story or the main characters.Overall, I liked the book and give it a 2.5 out of 5. I like the discoveries that came from reading the diary entries and the hints that I found within them. I'm interested in seeing how the plot develops, especially now that Frey has discovered her history.
review 2: I got Frey free on Kindle, and I enjoyed reading Frey, though there was one formatting thing that kept bothering me. There were no scene breaks. There were chapter breaks, but within a chapter if the scene shifted it was just the next paragraph. That brought me out of the story a few times.Another thing that took me out of the story every now and then was when Frey would do something uncharacteristically violent and despite being in her head, I had no idea it happened, nor did I understand her rationale for it. I get that her character is progressing down a certain path, but it almost seemed like for those scenes the author popped me out of her head and turned me into an observer. But I also think that might have been an intentional effect. So I'm withholding judgment on that for now.Otherwise, I found the characters engaging. Ruby was my favorite. The descriptions very well done, and the plot held my attention by slowly unraveling one mystery after another. I'm curious where the next book will lead, especially after some major revelations at the end of the book. I also loved the whole twist on fairy tales. Humans were the myths and elves were the norm. Awesome idea. less
