review 1: "I came to recognize that those letters were written while you faced some mortal danger--such as when your spark lighter died in the mountains and an ice storm closed in , when you were trapped while zombies battered a crumbling door in Venice, and when you were courting Captain Corsair." so much yes. This author is the one of the best steam punk writers I have ever read. Her books are funny and unique and she writes characters that I care about and like. In this particular series, the Kraken king is such a hearthrob, all macho the way he is. Yet he is confident and evolved enough to let Zenobia be his equal and not treating her like someone of lesser intelligence or like she is property. I like those kind of guys and I am so tired of the "he kept secrets to protect her" t... morerope, and the "he makes decisions for both of them without discussing it with her because she will be unreasonable" trope. In fact I think it is time for a "he treats her like a rational person who has an equal right to decision making power" trope.I also really like the plot of the story, it is interesting. The plot really makes sense yet it is not glaringly obvious what is coming up next and how it will happen. As I am writing this, I realize that I am talking about how much I enjoy this book by comparing it to poor writing and that doesn't feel right either. Is praising someone's writing that way similar to being pleasantly surprised that a person is good at thier job? I am trying to say that Meljean Brook is a much better writer than that but I can't say exactly what it is that makes her books so excellent. Probably just a combination of her unique world and getting characterization, plot and tone just exactly right. Yeah, that would be it, I think.
review 2: This was one of my least favorite of the serial, though that's really not saying much considering how much I loved this story over all. This section involves some harsh conflicts (the "darkest before the dawn" portion of the story), so it was going to be a more difficult read regardless of personal preference. My lower appreciate was mainly due to our hero and heroine having a little more interpersonal drama and misunderstandings than I would have liked. Nothing unbelievable for their established characters, and Brook resolves the personal side of things pretty quickly, but I have an aversion to "big misunderstanding" tropes that sucked some of the enjoyment out of things for me. Luckily, I hated the "villains" far more than I hated the romance trope, setting me up for to hunger for the hoped for triumph in Part VIII...Full review to follow.Sexual Content: Sex scenes. less
