review 1: Review for Parts 5 & 6PARTS 5-6:Man, this book is looong! I'd never thought I'd say it but I'm thankful THE KRAKEN KING is a serial otherwise it'll be one long epic adventure and I mean that literally! So it's quite impossible not to read parts 5 and 6 back to back because of the events that happened. In part 4, Zenobia Fox was once again abducted for the nth time! So of course in The Kraken King and the Iron Heart, it's expected that Ariq will waste no time in rescuing her. And that he did single handedly with a little help from Zenobia of course. Aside from Ariq's daring rescue of his romantic interest, I'd like to highlight that something sad happened here. Zenobia's precious letters from Archimedes as well as the manuscript for the book she's working on were confiscate... mored by her abductors and burned it. You might think, "But Braine, those are just letters," true but said missives were very important to Zenobia for a lot of reasons ranging from it's sentimental value to providing inspiration for her stories. My favorite so far is part 6, The Kraken King and the Crumbling Walls. Why you ask? Because finally, after 5 parts of constant teasing, flirting, and seducing Zenobia, Ariq finally had some boom boom pow! It's sexy time LOL! But it's not just sex for the sake of sex, Zenobia and Ariq's romantic relationship made leaps and bounds here. I guess Zenobia's abduction was the necessary push needed for these two to finally take their attraction to the next level. Ariq is such a complex hero and very traditional, very Asian, but still the gorgeous Alpha hero if that makes sense. There are slight nuances regarding Ariq's character vs other heroes in that his attraction to Zenobia didn't necessarily stem from her looks whereas the usual lead male responds to his love interest's female attributes. Not that Ariq is any better than them or is immune to Zenobia's wiles, it's just refreshing to read a hero that looked for and got attracted to the heroine's more substantial qualities than her superficial ones. So it's a given that this serial is worth a try. And for those of you who are curious if you can read the Iron Seas books as stand-alone, yes you can. By Meljean Brooks' admission on her FB page, she said that the series doesn't have an overarching arc and from a reader who jumped to book 4 without reading the previous 3, I can guarantee that you won't feel lost. Zenobia might mention her brother but whatever happened in Archimedes' book bears no weight in THE KRAKEN KING.
review 2: This is the sixth part in the eight part serial novelization of The Kraken King. The Kraken King will be released as an entire book in August 2014. This was a wonderful addition to the novel but definitely the most romance heavy installment in this serial novel.Ariq and Zenobia have arrived at the Red City. Ariq is trying to talk to the embassy and get an audience with the Empress of Nippon in order to stop the marauders’ plans. Zenobia writes to her brother in hope of getting him and Yasmine to help.Honestly about half of this novella is a very well done love scene between Ariq and Zenobia. It's a scene that's been a long time coming and was incredibly well written. Brook has always done an excellent job at balancing a very creative world with action, adventure, humor, and romance. In this installment the story definitely took a back seat to the romance, but the story is still there and progress was made there was well. We finally get to explore more of the this living coral city called the Red City. We are also introduced to the numerous clockwork creatures called the Queen’s Eyes that have to be wound every day by the Queen’s demand.I really do love Zenobia and Ariq’s relationship. They have a steamy relationship that is based on mutual respect. They accept and love each other faults and strengths. They are two incredibly interesting people to read about. As I have mentioned in previous reviews of this book, I am not a huge fan of it being released in parts. It's just kind of an abrupt stop and start for me and throws me out of the story. However it is clever that Brook starts each novella with a letter from Zenobia to Archimedes (her brother). This gives the reader a little refresher about where the story left off in the last installment and is very helpful to the reader, while also being humorous and entertaining. Overall this was an excellent installment of this series; I still love the characters and the world, they have been very entertaining and engaging. This was a very steamy and romance heavy novella, but the story wasn’t sacrificed either. I think fans of the series will love this installment just as much as I did! I can’t wait to read parts seven and eight. less
