review 1: Big bold pictures and playful rhyme, repetition and pacing make this one seem perfect for storytime sharing. I have to agree with one of my colleagues, though. It didn't make sense to me why jumping from one tree to another made the monkeys safe. According to the LC cataloging, the cat threatening the monkeys is a leopard, and you can see it at the bottom of both trees - the first one the monkeys climb and the one they jump to and are "safe." Leopards are know for climbing trees. Are they safe because the 1st one was big and old and easy for the cat to climb, but the new tree is slim and wouldn't hold its weight? I suppose it is possible, but just not as clear as I would have liked. . .
review 2: I mostly love this book. It's about two monkeys who get awa... morey from a large spotted cat. I like the rhymes. I like the illustrations. I just don't like how there isn't an overall picture of when the monkeys jump to safety over the big cat. Because I can't see this picture it just doesn't make sense as to why one jump would save them. Did they jump far enough the cat couldn't see them? Did they jump to another tree over a cliff? Why does the one jump save their lives? And what kind of spotted cat is it? I don't think it is a leopard...since they climb trees. Like I said, I mostly love it. less
