review 1: If you are looking for a completely different experience when reading a picture book, then the Black Book of Colors is for you! This winner of the Best Illustrated Children's Book Award is illustrated with raised pictures on black paper. There is not a color or visible line (other than the text in the book). The reader must feel the pictures that describe colors. Blue is described as a kite flying across the sky and brown is described as crunches under his feet like fall leaves or it smells like chocolate. I was initially drawn to this book as an example of an international book but I love the book for it's challenge to visual readers to imagine feeling or smelling colors. For those who have attempted to read braille, the experience of reading The Black Book of Color... mores will be invigorating. I will definitely use this book in my five senses units from now on!
review 2: Kids picture book. Randomly picked up by Josh during our weekly library haul. I read it to Josh with zero expectations and not much attention... But I don't know, I was almost moved to tears when I finished... Probably not the right emotions to have. Lol. I'm sure if you read this, and even if you do get the book, it would be different. Sorry for ruining this, no matter how vague I tried to keep my review. Something about the unexpected sneaks up to you, and knocks you off your feet. Original and lovely. less
