review 1: I loved this novel but I did not read it like an action/adventure targeted towards teenagers. I read it like a love story and it is probably the only book to bring me to tears. The husband's love for his wife, the son's love for his mother, and the brother's love for each other were themes woven throughout this book. I really appreciate the author's ability to accurately portray the different ways in which people grieve. I found the boating and island knowledge quite fascinating but I am most curious about the role of Dylan. As the middle child, his role was underplayed but his skills were absolutely essential to the survival of the three boys. I feel like the lack of attention on Dylan was purposeful . . . maybe to highlight Ben's emotional struggles? Overall very intense... more but much loved read!
review 2: I normally love stories about shipwrecks so when I found this book I was super excited. But the "shipwreck" didn't happen until the book was half over and by then I was ready for the book to be done. Over six months had passed for the characters. Their dad mysteriously vanished on the night before a large storm and the characters see an island in the distance and decide to go there. By that time I was skimming the book until the ending... I did really like the most of the characters though and liked to watch them develop. less
