review 1: Excellent observation... UN-matached analysis of the country's modern history and it's consequences leading to the current situation in Iran governed by the clerics.. Objective, without any emphasis on subjects the author might personally find interesting.. For non-Iranians, read this and you will no longer be confused about the contrast of Iranians abroad and the image presented of Iran in the media..
review 2: Works on multiple levels. First, an accessible history of Iran from the Shah (and even before) to the present. Second, a mediation on the ossification of revolutionary regimes into the corrupt status quo. And an occasional and persuasive questioning of Iran's position as international pariah, especially in light of the international community's treatme... morent of Iraq under Saddam (pre-1991, obviously) and Saudi Arabia.Axworthy occasionally digresses from the main point in frustrating ways, notably chronicling the Iran-Iraq War in great detail without a similar level of attention on how it impacted Iranian society at large or the revolution. less
