review 1: Picked up this as an audio book thinking the title sounded interesting. This book was hard to stay with to the point of I just couldn't put myself through the last two discs. Very confusing at the beginning as to which character is telling the story. When "Chaz" goes from one time period to the next, it is easy to understand, but the story drones on and on about various artists and painting styles. As a person who doesn't know the various artists, I had no understanding if I should be impressed or not. My overall impression is that Chaz is a doped out artist living in a total psychotic world. The writer makes you want to feel sorry for Chaz, but I couldn't, I felt disappointed and disgusted that he didn't take more ownership of his life. He always seemed to be out "... moreto score the big job" to get money for habits, to get his wives off his back, and the only redeeming quality was to help his sick kid. Sad to say I couldn't put myself through the rest of it to see if he od's or really does make it and turns his life and his kids lives around for the better.
review 2: My first book on art. I did not know any of the paintings mentioned nor do I understand how the art world works. That being said, I think Gruber did an okay job with trying to get it to make sense to a novice. I hate stories where people screw with others minds and that seems to be the case here. The author did a good job (I guess without giving all the details) of not letting on what was actually happening, but it made for some re reading and going back to the beginning again to ensure I was following along. I learned that the art world is huge and complicated business and I'm glad I'm not rich enough to be involved less

Artist forges rate work that assumed lost during WWII. He cannot tell if it is illusion or reality.
