review 1: Good story, great characters, excellent setting. Hey, this is a Michael Gruber novel. The protagonist is dying anyway, might as well go back to Mexico and find out what happened to his wife's family, who were murdered by drug runners. Accompanied by his semi-crazy Spec Ops buddy, and later joined by his daughter, whom he was trying to shield from all this our hero prevails. Of course he dies. He was always going to, but not before accomplishing everything he set out to do. Good on him. Good on Gruber.
review 2: Wonderful read. Richard Marder, the lead character, is internally defined by a past that his family and most friends know little about. Joined, by Skelly a comrade from their time in Vietnam, he returns to his wife's home town in Mexico to inter her as
... morehes. There are conflicts with family, drug dealers, and biker gangs, but the best part of the story is the exploration of Mexican culture. Highly recommended. less

Interesting to learn about Mexican history and culture but not very rewarding in the end.

The first 60 pages were hard to get through, but after that this book took off.
