review 1: Very interesting read. Two story lines merge. Leah Teal strives to be a good detective and to recover from the sudden death of her husband. Bits of his past begin to reveal themselves. Sylvie was 5 when her baby brother was shot while sitting at the dinner table. She has never recovered and now has a child of her own. she is convinced that someone is gaslighting her. Abe Teal thinks he and his best friend can solve any mystery, with or without the help of his mother. the story has an unexpected twist at the end. I almost didn't complete it but I'm glad I did.
review 2: Had a really hard time getting into this book. I read it b/c it was set in Alabama and the premise seemed interesting enough. The dialog was off. I kept having to remind myself the time
... moreperiod was the 1980-90s and not the 1890s. I have lived in AL all my life and have never heard anyone use the word "mite". Also, did every, single person in town have to use "was" in place of "were". I did enjoy some of the characters though and the mystery somewhat. less

Good book. Lots of subplots including sibling rivalry, boyhood goofiness, genealogy, and murder.

This was a very good read. I liked the characters, the scenery, the mystery, then ending.
