review 1: Although not overly long and written in a very accessible style, this book could still have been shorter. Nevertheless, some people probably need more convincing than I do that we have moved from a "market economy" to a "market society." And that such a move entails ethical and moral consequences that can degrade and corrupt the quality of our common life. There are still those who claim that markets are both efficient and ethically neutral ways to distribute goods, services and capital -- just as there are people who claim technologies are ethically neutral -- but increasing commoditization leads us to consider "the good" in radically new ways. Or to ignore it altogether. It's a message that needs to be heard, if we care anything about the public good.
review 2:... more> This is the second book by this author i read, following "Justice" (which by the way is great, too.) Very thought-provoking. I liked that he helps you tease out what exactly are the elements that make certain practices repugnant or morally disturbing, such as when companies pocket the insurance money when their employees die or when schools rent out advertising space in the curricula through "sponsored education tools." I've often felt that way but couldn't exactly put my finger on what it is that makes me feel uncomfortable. This book helped me articulate my thoughts on those issues (including thoughts that disagree with the author's.) I would say if you would like to read a thought-provoking non-fiction book and you enjoy debates on social issues in general, this would be a good one to read. I still think Justice is slightly better (because of the scope of the themes it covers) but this one is still worth a read. less

One of those books....if you read the first chapter, you have read the whole book.

Interesting, not exactly as per title. More what money should not buy, possibly.
