review 1: I had to force myself to finish this book. Everything felt very disjointed, from plot to character development, it was sort of all over the place. Never really got into a good, building flow. Plot lines emerged and dwindled almost randomly. Trivial scenes took pages and pages while what seemed like the story's climax occurred in a page or two, and then the book continued on for chapters and chapters. Just weird. When you are asking "where is this going" and "what???" throughout, and still wondering as you turn the last page, might have been better off to just put it down without finishing.
review 2: This is not the usual type of book that I read, however, I decided to give it a try. The story was well-written and takes place in the panhandle of Florida. The mai... moren character is Ella, a woman who married a gambler despite her aunt's disapproval. Ella is a strong, determined woman with three boys to raise alone and a shop to run because her husband deserts her after an drug-induced rage. The story starts out sad because before Ella's husband left, he saddled her with lots of debts. Ella struggles to meet the monthly payments for her shop to the bank, in which the banker is a greedy crook after her inheritance: a piece of land. When Ella needs help the most, in walks Lanier, her husband's cousin. Lanier is running from his past and takes refuge with Ella and her family. Together, they work hard to save the shop and to keep the bank from taking possession of her property. Though I do not really prefer this type of genre, I did find Ella's determination and Lanier's selflessness to be positive. This is a decent story written by a talented author and I recommend this book to those who want a book that is not just another romance story. less
