review 1: This one had a really interesting story premise - about living on a remote island off the shore from the Outer Banks area..There were alternating chapters from current times and a historical character. And the characters were fairly well developed. I was mightily distracted by the author routinely using 'of' instead of 'have' - that sort of improper grammar always sticks in my craw. I made it to the end, but it was not a page turner by any means.
review 2: I was disappointed in this one. I was expecting a historical fiction story involving a pirate (a pirate story that isn't a cheesy romance novel? Sign me up!), but got a character study about two generations of people living on an island near one that was once "owned" by a pirate. The pirate, himself, make
... mores one or two appearances. It is mostly about a young woman whose ship ran aground near the pirate's island and who was spared because he thought she was "touched" by God, her love interest and, later, a freed slave who came to work for her. The second generation in the book is made up of the final three people alive on the island: the first characters' two great-great-great granddaughters and a man descended from the freed slave. There isn't much of a plot, just these characters' experiences on the island. The women are all pretty self-centered and unlikable. The men are all very proud and stubborn. It is told from the point of view of the first woman, both of her 3x great granddaughters and the descendent of the freed slave, with chapters serving to alter the point of view. It was...interesting? Sort of. But mostly not an adventure historical fiction about a pirate. less

A little weird, a little dark. I liked the juxtaposition of historical and present day story lines.
