review 1: Honestly, I loved it. I am so glad I read this book. I felt I was there in Iraq with this brave Marines fighting the good fight. It doesn't seem like that this is the 1st time that this amazing author has written a book. I congratulate him for writing something so real and touching, even though this book is a work of fiction. This is a must read for all those who want to understand what it feels like to be a Marine.
review 2: War literature is a necessary evil-one that needs to be read to understand why and how we create the problems and how we deal with the aftermath. The title is derived from the characters work details, that of checking for roadside bombs and the ensuing repairs. The first act is to look 5 meters in all directions from within the vehicle. As... moresuming all is clear, the next step involves sweeping 25 yards in all directions to make sure the coast is clear before they can resume. This action becomes a metaphor for the entire book...Pitre's work is sure to be included in the canon of literature to help explain the devastation of war. Narrated by three individuals, an officer, and enlisted man and an Iraq interpreter,allows us to see the integrity, conflicts,& dangers inherent within the struggle.It also highlights the tremendous strain that faces the individuals trying to mainstream back into life. less
