review 1: In Michael Poore's UP JUMPS THE DEVIL, THE devil, or John Scratch as he calls himself, evolves into a complex character who eats humans rather than suffer fools and magically castrates a henchman who is about to thrash The Lord of Darkness. But Scratch also comes to have a complicated affection for the willfully ignorant bipeds who consider themselves at the top of Earth's food chain. There are elements of Christopher Moore and Bill Fitzhugh in this novel that alternates between chapters that explore the protagonist's back story with the plight of three members of a 1960s band, all of whom sell their soul to the Devil, and their diverging lives as they find separate paths into the 21st century. The a devil is a randy fellow so this narrative is spiced with his coital explo... moreits and he is a player at the table of history so the reader is treated to interactions with the likes of George Washington at the battle of Trenton and the Devil's eye view as an unarmed participant in the first line of Pickett's charge against the Union forces at Gettysburg. UP JUMPS THE DEVIL is a rewarding read.
review 2: This is a very original story about, well the devil. What if the devil does what he does because he actually wants the best for for the human race, and considers earth his planet not God's. Up Jumps the Devil takes this idea and follows it through history. It also tracks 3 individuals who sell their soul to them for fame and fortune assigning them to different career paths with mixed results. This is a very original entertaining book. less
