review 1: This book is special in two ways - the story plays out in Iceland and Tolkien and the Lord of the Rings is interwoven in the story in a clever way. The main carachter is a likeable Cop from Boston who has to go back to his natice Iceland to get away from a Gang who wants to kill him because he is a witness in a corupt policeman trial. That's the beginning. Back in Iceland he investigates and solves murder cases - all connected. The description of the country, the people and the references to Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and the Icelandic sagas and the good plot make this a very good book.

... more read for June. I'm really not the best at writing book reviews, but what I would like to share is that I thought that the plot was intriguing throughout the story, Mr. Ridpath was easily able to convey the feel of the Icelandic landscape, and best of all, Magnus, the detective/main character, is someone who most people can relate to, or at least would get along with. There was just the right amount of action, suspense, and humor, all seasoned with a bit of folklore. I will immediately be adding the next in the series, Far North, to my wish list and I might even go so far as to pre-order it. less
