review 1: Easy, enjoyable read. While the people and examples related are somewhat random, still he fills out background information in a topical survey that is most interesting on the state of pets in our culture c. 2008. I am glad I read it. The chapter on pet bereavement was quite affecting and personally relevant, since I have lost several pets in recent years. I thought Katz' The New Work of Dogs was more in depth but this was informative on the broader level.
review 2: It took me f.o.r.e.v.e.r. to finish this book, because one of the middle chapters bored me into setting it aside for a few months. But once I picked it back up, I couldn't put it down. Perhaps because I'm involved with the pet industry, many of the outlandish topics didn't surprise me as much as
... morethey likely would an average pet owner. I may pamper my pooch, but I'm tame compared to the extreme possibilities that Schaffer discusses. He does a good job of encompassing every aspect of the wacky "companion animal" industry and voicing differing opinions in an unbiased manner. less
