review 1: Hey, it was free to borrow on my Kindle. AND I was really intrigued in the idea that Lewis was using medieval cosmology as themes for each of the Narnia books. Not that I've read them all. I haven't.But after reading That Hideous Strength in which eldils from different planets are significant, Ward's idea made sense.I am 50% done and am really enthralled by this idea. I actually will pick up the Narnia series with book 4 and finish it after I'm done. The whole explanation of medieval cosmology as seen in the Narnia books is riveting and, if for no other reason, I am very glad to be introduced to the subject. I've requested Ward's earlier, more scholarly, book on this subject and also C.S. Lewis's "The Discarded Image" for his explanation of medieval mindsets (it's supposed ... moreto be pretty amazing).FINALI liked this so much that I got Planet Narnia by the same author, which is his first book on the subject (and less succinct and possibly less dumbed down - not that this feels dumbed down, actually).
review 2: Ward claims to have unraveled a secret code pertaining to all the Narnia books-something that Lewis put in on purpose, and which, very subtly, holds the whole series together while subconsciously working on the reader's mind. No, it's not like one of those "Bible codes" that tells you Leviticus 4:14 secretly predicts who will win an Oscar next year. It's more in the nature of a hidden theme, deliberately concealed by C. S. Lewis, to heighten the impact of his art. So the title is a bit misleading.Michael Ward discovered through his reading of “The Planets,” a poem by Lewis, that beyond the story and the biblical meanings, there was a third layer, a secret code, namely that Lewis infused the characteristics of the seven planets in Medieval Cosmology into each Narnia tale. Now Ward has brought his scholarly findings to a larger audience with the release of The Narnia Code. The Narnia Code is a fast paced, easy to read book that serves as an excellent introduction to Ward’s discovery of the planetary blueprint that undergirds the Narnia series. Throughout the book, you will learn many things about the seven planets (Jupiter, Mars, Sol, Luna, Mercury, Venus, and Saturn), their characteristics, and word origins that escape our modern (or perhaps post-modern) minds. For example, I never thought the word commerce was connected with Mercury. Fascinating. This book provides a glimpse into Lewis’s appreciation of the pre-Copernican worldview and how his thoughts on the kappa (hidden) element in story show most prominently in how each Narnia book is infused with the characteristics of the planets. This book will leave you wanting more and lead you to Ward’s larger work, Planet Narnia, and perhaps to the Narnia series knowing that it was the product of an intricate mind. More importantly this book will give you insight into Lewis’s Christian thinking and understanding that “The heavens are telling the glory of God…” less
