review 1: I read "paranormal" in the review and thought of ghosts and horror. The author delivers ghosts and horror, but not in the traditional sense. He also delivers a very real feeling of childlike innocence in a situation that is not sunshine and flowers. We meet the main character, Sol, at the end of his life. Sol takes us on a journey back to his childhood, and then back further still. I occasionally had to stop reading just to allow the moment and emotions some time to sink in and settle. I think it was the innocence that struck me the most. This is definately going on my "treasured" bookshelf to be read again- something I can say about very few books!
review 2: Thought it was fabulous-kept me up reading and when I was done it kept me up thinking about it. I lov... moree the author's ideas about the way things are after death, and I don't think he's far wrong. I recommend this book. I read this book in a very short time, just because I couldn't put it down. I loved going back in time. I hope the ghostly parts weren't intended to be creepy, because to me, they weren't. They actually felt totally real and normal. Sol had no trouble accepting his ghosts, and for me, he worked hard to earn the title, 'beloved character.' Even as a boy, he always seemed to rise above, to do the right thing. I don't believe in putting spoilers in reviews, so I will just say that as a parent of a handicapped child, I appreciate Sol's loving acceptance of his sister and that will stick with me long after having finished the book. Well done. I was sorry to see it end. less
