review 1: Heavy, emotional strain inducing material. A fantastic debut novel, The Almond Tree weaves both the Palestinian and Israeli sides of the Gaza and surrounding areas conflict into one addictive story that doesn't gloss over hardship, loss, and the horrors of war in the least. Told from the point of view of a Palestinian boy growing up in eternal conflict, watching his family be torn apart, hating both the Israelis and the Palestinian militants provoking them and then learning to forgive. Written (surprisingly) by a Jewish author, the candidness of the book is stunning, and a poignant read both for those who have followed the Israeli-Palestinian conflicts and those who want to understand further-- as well as a complex look into the life, from beginning to almost-end, of an ex... moretraordinary individual. I'm not claiming that this book has incredible historical/contemporary accuracy, but it's a work of fiction, after all- and one that I think has the potential to appeal to a very wide audience.
review 2: This book documents the cruelty and harshness of life for Palestinians under Israeli rule. It is grim and tough. But the ending is a triumph and the book rises like Phoenix from the ashes. Although the book may intend to demonstrate resolution to the Palestinian Israeli conflict through collaboration rather than confrontation this seems barely possible given the entrenched hatred and violence on both sides as documented in this book. Nevertheless the Palestinian hero of this book is himself able to rise above the conflict which has cut a swathe through his family, and realise his exceptional potential as a scientist working with his Jewish colleague friend and collaborator. less

I would not recommend this fiction. It is very heavy handed.
