review 1: I received this book from Goodreads for review. I read many critiques before starting this book but I will offer my own opinion. Many people either loved or hated it based on the controversial topic of Palestinian rights. Instead of getting into the political morass, I want to judge this book as a novel. It is fiction, very well written. The author grabs your attention quickly and holds you until the last page. Although the Palestinians suffer many injustices here, we are only seeing one side - but how much have the Israelis (Jews) endured? So, as a literary novel, it is worth reading. But let's not treat this as a treatise on the whole Israeli/Palestinian conflict.
review 2: I won this book in a First Reads giveaway in exchange for an honest review.
... moreAs soon as I started reading this book, I realized that, despite being written by a Jewish woman, it was quite biased towards Palestinians. I don't typically read books that are political, but I did find myself sucked into Ichmad's story. I definitely sympathize with the plight of the Palestinians, but I think Corasanti grossly oversimplifies the situation. Nevertheless, the story was a good one and I enjoyed reading it. less
