review 1: My wife bought this book, along with every other Richard & Judy book ever chosen by them for inclusion in their television programme. Most of these books I don't read because they are usually not my cup of tea. This one, being a ghost story, I decided to give a chance. Although well written and well researched it was far too slow for me, and nothing really happens until 50 pages from the end. Even then it appears to be more about what Jack thinks is happening rather than any action taken by the apparition.
review 2: I don't think this really deserves 4 stars- but the writing didn't suck (automatic 3) and I enjoyed it, so I guess it gets 4. No real reason that it doesn't deserve 4- just that it wasn't anything SPECIAL and 4 starts seems like it should be for sp... moreecial books. I gave Jeff Vandermeer's 'Authority' the same rating a day later- and it's really more worthy, but I hesitate to give it 5 in case I hate the 3rd volume. Why is it more worthy? Maybe because 'Dark Matter' is what I would call an 'easy read'- but not in a bad way- it just didn't try to be more complicated or pretentious than it needed to be. Recommended. less
